Proposed influence of SAM on the conformation of EcoKI

SAM acts as an allosteric effector allowing HsdS and HsdM-SAM access to the DNA substrate. This may be accomplished because SAM can open the methylase complex allowing separation of the two HsdR subunits which block access to the DNA (Powell et al. (1993) J. Mol. Biol. 234, 60-71).
